Taipei Healthcare: How to See a Doctor, Get TCM, and Use Your NHI Card

Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) consistently ranks as one of the world's best healthcare systems. For foreigners, it's remarkably accessible — but the process isn't always obvious. Here's how to navigate it.

NT$1,000–2,500
Monthly NHI premium for most foreigners. Employer covers 60%, you pay 30%, government covers 10%.

Getting Your NHI Card

Who qualifies: ARC holders working legally in Taiwan. Students on long-term visas. Some digital nomad visas now include coverage. Your employer usually handles the application. If self-employed, visit the NHI office with your ARC, passport, and proof of residence. Processing takes 2–4 weeks.

Finding English-Speaking Doctors

TMU Hospital
Taipei Medical University
International patient center with English-speaking staff. Most specialties available. Near Taipei 101.
NTU Hospital
National Taiwan University
The most prestigious public hospital. Some English-speaking doctors, but availability varies by department. Best for serious conditions.
Mackay Memorial
Long History with Expats
Good English support, especially in obstetrics and pediatrics. Many international patients over the years.
Neighborhood Clinics
Hidden Gems
Many have English-speaking doctors. Look for 'English OK' signs. Quality is often excellent and wait times are shorter than hospitals.

Western Medicine vs. TCM

Taiwan uniquely integrates both. You can visit a Western doctor and TCM practitioner for the same condition — NHI covers both. Why Taiwan's system is special

When to choose Western: Acute conditions, infections, injuries, anything requiring surgery or scans. When to choose TCM: Chronic conditions, digestive issues, sleep problems, stress, recovery from illness. Many Taiwanese use TCM for ongoing wellness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

What to Expect at TCM
A typical visit
01
Pulse Diagnosis
The practitioner feels your pulse at three positions on each wrist. This reveals your body's internal state.
02
Tongue Examination
Stick out your tongue. Color, coating, and shape all provide diagnostic information.
03
Herbal Prescription
You'll receive a week's worth of powdered herbs in packets. Dissolve in hot water, drink twice daily. Taste is bitter — this is normal.
04
Acupuncture
Widely available, often in the same clinic. NT$200–500 per session with NHI. Effective for pain, stress, and sleep issues.

Dental Care

NHI covers basic dental: cleanings (NT$150–300), fillings, extractions. Cosmetic work (whitening, veneers) is out-of-pocket. Taipei Medical University Dental Hospital for complex work. Neighborhood clinics for cleanings and checkups — quality is generally excellent.

Emergency Services

119: Emergency number. Ambulance service is free with NHI. Major emergency rooms: NTU Hospital (Zhongzheng), Taipei Medical University Hospital (Xinyi), Mackay Memorial (Zhongshan). Non-emergency but urgent: Many clinics stay open until 21:00. For late-night non-emergencies, some hospitals have "evening clinics" (夜間門診) with shorter waits and lower costs than the ER.

One curated read, one protocol, one idea worth holding — every Thursday.
