The Shirt Is Still Damp: Doing Laundry Through Taiwan’s Wet Weather

For a small apartment, laundry is also a space problem. A drying rack borrows the floor you need for dinner, work, or getting to the window. The expensive mistake is assuming that another appliance will automatically settle the argument.

Start with the load you actually need dry. Work shirts for tomorrow deserve a different plan from spare bedsheets. That sounds unambitious. It is also more useful than filling every hanger and hoping the weather changes its mind.

Give the rack a job, and a place

Before washing, decide where the load will dry. Leave enough space between garments that you can reach between them without pushing a wet sleeve aside. Open out folded hems and separate the heavy items from the lighter ones. Follow each garment’s care label, including any limits on spinning and tumble drying.

The aim is a manageable batch. If the only available spot is also your route to the bathroom, a smaller wash is a reasonable compromise. A home does not become more efficient because you can no longer walk through it.

Give the moisture somewhere to go

ENERGY STAR identifies indoor clothes drying as a source of household moisture. Its guidance for a room being dehumidified is to close the doors and windows while the unit operates, leaving air free to circulate around the appliance. If your machine supports clothes drying, use its instructions for placement and clearance. Keep garments, drips, and drain hoses away from electrical connections. A rack should never turn the appliance into a shelf for wet fabric. Do not improvise a drying mode on a machine whose instructions do not allow it.

Taiwan’s Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection also advises against running a dehumidifier while nobody is home or while you sleep. Keep clothes away from its air outlet, and clean or replace the filter according to the manual. Plan a drying session you can supervise, rather than leaving the machine to work through the night. A laundromat can be the sensible choice

Sometimes the better purchase is one drying cycle rather than an appliance you have nowhere to store. Check the garment labels, the machine instructions, and the price shown at the shop. Do not assume every fabric can take the hottest setting.

This is particularly worth considering when a large wash would occupy the room for the rest of the day. The trade-off is straightforward: the trip and the drying charge against the space you get back. There is no virtue in using a dining chair as a permanent sock rack.

Finish the job before starting another

Check cuffs, waistbands, and seams before putting clothes away. If a piece needs more time, leave it out rather than hiding the unfinished job in the wardrobe. Keep one small part of the rack free for these stragglers.

Then plan the next wash around the space that is actually available. The useful routine is the one that leaves you with something dry to wear and somewhere to sit.
