A Saturday Morning in Wanhua: Market First, Plans Second

Dong Sanshui Street Market, U-mkt and Bopiliao, with room for lunch and a change of weather.

The market is the part of this walk that cannot wait until the afternoon. Start around nine, leave the cultural spaces until they open, and give lunch the time left over. That is enough structure for one Saturday.

This is a researched route, checked against the linked venue and city pages on September 26, 2026. Allow three to four hours including browsing and a meal; that is an editorial planning allowance, not a measured walking time. The accompanying illustrations show everyday objects and textures, not photographs of these venues.

Begin with what is already happening

Arrive at Longshan Temple MRT station and head towards Sanshui Street between Kangding Road and Kunming Street. The Taipei Markets Administration lists Dong Sanshui Street Market’s hours as 07:00 to noon. Individual stalls may differ. Saturday avoids the Monday closure of the cultural stops later in the route.

Bring a small bag and buy only what you can comfortably carry. A market visit becomes much less pleasant when you spend the rest of the morning worrying about a heavy or perishable purchase. Ask before photographing a stall or its customers, keep passageways clear, and let someone finish serving before asking a question. Our morning-market guide covers the shopping part in more detail.

At ten, change pace

U-mkt, at 70 Sanshui Street, opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. The operator lists the permanent exhibition “A Bite of U-mkt” among its spaces. The building offers a chance to consider the market you have just walked through, rather than treating old architecture as another photo stop.

Entry is listed as free by Taipei Travel. Check separately for any ticketed activity. The operator’s visitor information lists an accessible ramp, accessible toilet and nursing room; ask staff about access to your intended space. Public areas are not picnic areas, and there is no visitor drinking-water dispenser. Bring water and keep food for a permitted dining area.

Leave one more stop optional

From Sanshui Street, use Kangding Road to reach Bopiliao Historic Block around Lane 173. Its operator lists outdoor opening Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 21:00, and interiors 09:00 to 18:00; Monday is closed. An open street does not mean every exhibition room is open. Look at the current programme before choosing how long to stay.

If you are enjoying U-mkt, you can stop there. If you continue, take a little time with the buildings and any open exhibition rather than walking the block just to mark it done. Three nearby places are plenty for a morning. The temple-etiquette guide is useful if you decide to add Longshan Temple on another visit.

Save the route, not a rigid timetable

Open the walking route in Google Maps. Check the selected destinations before following it; routing can change. The intended order is MRT, market, U-mkt, Bopiliao, then a meal or return to the station. Cross at marked crossings and leave space for working stalls and deliveries.

Set aside NT$300 to NT$500 per person for a modest meal, a drink and small market purchases if that suits your budget. This is a suggested spending cap, not a quote from any stall; MRT fares and larger purchases are extra. Read menus before ordering. You can also spend much less by keeping the outing to the cultural spaces and bringing water.

When it rains

In light rain, shorten the market browsing and spend more time inside U-mkt. In heavy rain, skip the outdoor Bopiliao leg. This is not a continuously covered or independently audited step-free route, so anyone who needs guaranteed access should check with the venues before leaving home.

Have lunch when you feel ready, then go home without adding one more destination. For another manageable plan, return to Taiwan, This Month. A free afternoon is a good thing to bring back from a morning out.
